Review
Asterix & the Magic CauldronSTORY / GAMEPLAY
The year is 50BC and the game takes place in a Roman-occupied Gaul. Romans have conquered the territory except your village that still holds against them. The action starts at the Gaul village and Asterix -along with Ovelix- must move on to the forest and the Roman camps. The main quest is to find and retrieve all the Magic Cauldron's missing pieces, so that the magician Getafix can brew a magic portion to protect the village and defeat the mighty Roman soldiers. Along the way you will encounter several incoming Roman troops and must defeat them with your powerful fists. A unique feature of this game is that when Asterix meets a wild boar or a Roman centurion, a separate fight scene (in a zoomed perspective) ensues. Your energy bar is shown as food and you need to replenish your energy quite often as the Romans are hard to take down in each fight. Defeated wild boars can be eaten to provide extra stamina. Asterix and The Magic Cauldron is a really fun game!

GRAPHICS / SOUND
The graphics are really nice on the CPC using a large number of colors, cartoonish backgrounds and sprites much like the ones depicted on the comic book series. Apart of the classic 2D gameplay the game occasionally changes into a pseudo three-dimensional gameplay! The sound though, is quite poor on the CPC version (and the Spectrum), while on the Commodore it has really nice tunes during gameplay.

Amstrad CPC 464/664/6128

Amstrad CPC 464/664/6128CPU: ZiLOG Z80 4MHZ
MEMORY: 64 KB or 128 KB of RAM depending on the model (capable of being expanded to 512k using memory extension boards)
GRAPHICS: Motorola 6845 address generator, Mode 0: 160x200 / 16 colors, Mode 1: 320x200 / 4 colors, Mode 2: 640x200 / 2 colors, A colour palette of 27 colors was supported
SOUND: The CPC used the General Instrument AY-3-8912 sound chip, providing 3 channels Mono Sound (via internal speaker) but capable to offer Stereo Sound provided through a 3.5 mm headphones jack (with pretty impressive outcome!). Also, it is possible to play back digital sound samples at a resolution of approximately 5bit. This technique is very processor-intensive though.
